STUDENTS in Devon's secondary schools have achieved a big improvement in their benchmark GCSE pass rates setting a new county record. The percentage of students gaining five or more A*-C passes at GCSE last summer went up by 2.4 per cent to 58 per cent compared to 55.6 per cent in 2005. The national figure for maintained schools is 57 per cent. And those gaining five or more A*-C passes including English and maths went up to 46.2 per cent from 44.4 per cent in 2005 - a rise of 1.8 per cent. That compares with a national figure for maintained schools of 43.8 per cent. New figures published today by the DfES show Devon is ahead of neighbouring authorities in Cornwall, Somerset and Torbay.
