Ringing in the Olympics
In Beijing stadium on Sunday 24th August 2008 at 3.45pm, the Mayor of Beijing will hand the Olympic flag to the Mayor of London and the UK will become the Olympic host nation. It’s a moment the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games wants us all to mark and celebrate.
Britain’s major cities and local authorities will be celebrating the moment in a variety of ways. The South West is being asked to mark the moment with "two minutes noise" and an invitation to bellringers is extended from Richard Crowe, 2012 Creative programmer and Team South West to peal the bells.
Details are available from Richard Crowe at richard.crowe@culturesouthwest.org.uk

From Our District Councillor
Dear Parishioners,
I share the feelings surrounding the imminent loss of the post office at our village shop. An enormous amount of effort was generated by so many to state our case in Ashwater, and, sadly like so many others there is an enormous sense of being let down from the powers from afar who know little about our way of life. I have learnt very quickly from local government that it is one thing to offer consultation, and, very much another to appreciate it. However, I continue to write to Westminster and I know that our MP Geoffrey Cox QC continues to press the issue. If you wish to speak to Geoffrey he will be holding a surgery at Halwill Junction on Tues 5 August at the Village Hall Car Park (11.45am – 12.45pm).
On a happy note I was lucky enough to spend a day with Summer Club this week in the Ashwater Methodist Church. The morning was set aside for children with many retired/nearly retired joining later in the day. A light lunch was served, too, and everyone had a wonderful time. Further days are to be held on 5, 12 and 19 August and I would recommend it to all. Barry and Hazel have full details at the village shop.
My contact details, should anyone wish to speak to me about the above or any other matter are 01409 211234 / 07739 972043 or e-mail

Meantime, I bid you all a very happy summer holiday period.
My every best wish.
District Councillor, Barry M Parsons

Re:Ashwater New Parish Hall Registered Charity No. 1016238
You may have heard that our lottery bid for the new parish hall has been agreed.
This is indeed good news but unfortunately does not tell the whole story.
The amount offered to us ( £380,000 ) does not match the amount requested and we actually have a funding shortfall in the region of £69,000.
Under the rules of the lottery we must start the build of the new hall within one year or we could forfeit the grant. After a ten year campaign this would be a disaster.
Other sources of funding are being actively pursued by Ivan Buxton and his team, but you will appreciate that we need to do everything possible to raise additional monies.
To this end, we are asking that if you have not previously pledged a donation, would you please consider doing so now.
We would appreciate any amount and are now able to get, from the Inland Revenue, through the Gift Aid Scheme, an additional 25p for each pound donated.
If you feel you can help, please return the completed Pledge Form to me as soon as possible.
We will only ask you to make the donation and complete a simple Gift Aid Form when we actually require the money.
Please also support the fundraising events that are being organised over the coming months.
Thank you.
