Village Musical Talent Show

Would anyone be interested in taking part in an evening ‘talent’ event, probably early 2009 to help raise funds for the new parish hall?
We need local singers and instrument players willing to donate their time and talent to perform "a turn". All kinds of singers and music welcome - classical, rock, choirs, pop, folk, blue grass, funk, blues - you name it and we will consider it. Ring Jan Madge on 211104 to register interest - don’t be shy!

Parish Website

The website at www.ashwaterparish.org.uk has been updated to include more information. Parish events can be added provided reasonable notice is given and it is always worth checking to keep abreast of information or read back copies of the newsletter. Thanks go to Brandy North for her work on this important village link.

Post Office

The Consumer Council for Postal Services have declined to champion the cause for retaining a full post office service in Ashwater. According to Network Project Team Supervisor Michael Legg, Postwatch investigated the closure proposal and felt it did not need to challenge Post Office Ltd over their announcement to install an outreach service. They said the Government laid down minimum recommendations including criteria that "…for each individual postcode district: 95% of the population of the postcode district to be within 6 miles of their nearest Post Office." Anyone wishing to comment on their decision should write to Postwatch, FREEPOST or Email:info@postwatch.co.uk

Agricultural Show

The inclement weather put paid to the show so for the second year running we must wait for the 58th event to take place. Let’s hope for ‘3rd time lucky’ in 2009.
The two draws however did take place with Lorraine Fishleigh winning a trip in an air balloon and Gilbert Rendle, Sue Shoot and Angela Gerry winning the cash prizes of £50, £30, and £20 respectively.
Although everything else was cancelled the aptly named ‘Showers the Clown’ was able to entertain the children in the marquees on the Village Green.
Thanks also to ‘Mrs Recycle’ from Torridge who braved the wet journey to set up a stall along with the Parish Council display in the tent kindly loaned by Broadwoodwidger.

Horticultural Show

The 76th Annual Show managed to cheat the weather and took place on the Village Green. The number and quality of entries was remarkable considering the volume of rain that fell throughout the growing season. Each category was keenly contested and the Perpetual Shield in memory of Mr. P. Moon was awarded to Mrs. R. Fry.
Winner of Best Pot Plant and most points in Vegetable Classes was Mrs. F. Bull.
Most points for Cookery and Handicraft were by Mrs. M. May-Yates.
Best collection of vegetables Mr. S. Mitchell and Best Wine entries Mrs. S. Henry.
The Best Hanging Basket display was by Janet Williams.
In the Children’s classes the winner was George Bone and Best Children’s Garden was Arthur Edwards and Jessica Martyn.
Thanks are due to District Councillor Barry Parsons for presenting the trophies and congratulations to Fiona Bull and her team for making the day such a success including all helpers for erecting the tents, tea making, stewarding and running the raffle.
The next Horticultural meeting will be the AGM on Saturday 13th September at 1pm and held at Braddon. There will be a short meeting, followed by a picnic lunch and the beautiful grounds of Braddon to roam around. We would like to see as many members as possible and would welcome anybody who would like to join the Club to come along. With regard to the picnic it would be nice if everybody brought a plate of something for the picnic and whatever they want to drink.
At the meeting we would like ideas and suggestions for next year's show so this is your chance to speak about how you want it to be or what changes you think would be of benefit.
Wendy Lee has a couple of photographs left over from the show, so please email Wendy at: wleemoorside@tiscali.co.uk if they are wanted back.

Parish Council

There was no meeting during August, but the Parish Council is continuing to monitor the position with regard to the Dunsland wind turbines.

It is possible that some "affordable" housing may be built in Ashwater, would anyone interested or who knows anyone who might be interested, please get in touch with either Betty Batt 221666 or Sheila Myers at: clerk@sheanddave.plus.com .

The Parish Council is seeking to co-opt an additional parish councillor and the following notice will also appear on the notice board and in the village shop:

Help….!

We need one person from the Parish to join us on the Parish Council.
The work is not onerous, usually 12 meetings a year. We are a small friendly group, able to reach consensus without strife, but by no means complacent, endeavouring to do what we hope, is in the best interest of the village.
Areas of influence:
Local planning
Maintenance of Footpaths
Council Tax Precept
Matters Affecting the Parish
Any volunteer needs:
A serious concern for the Parish of Ashwater
A sense of humour
Plenty of warm winter clothing, able to stand the bitter cold and draught of the existing Parish Hall (we hope for only one more winter)

We are supported by Des Shadrick (DCC) and Barry Parsons (TDC) at present. The status of Parish Councils is due to be enhanced when the new County Structure of the Boundary Commission is announced. This could be a very interesting time. Contact either Betty Batt 01409 221666 or Sheila Myers at: clerk@sheanddave.plus.com

From Our District Councillor

Anyone who wishes to contact District Councillor Barry Parsons should ring 01409 211234 or 07739 972043 or e-mail: councillor.parsons@torridge.gov.uk.

Auntie Mary’s Saffron Cake

We are currently compiling a booklet of Ashwater’s favourite recipes.
Hopefully, this booklet will be available in time for Christmas. So please can we have your favourite recipes a.s.a.p. It would be an added bonus if you could add a few lines about why it is a favourite, or perhaps its history. Has it been passed down from great granny Euphemia, or is it a 21st century creation? All are very welcome.
We would also like to have a children’s section. So any recipe that youngsters enjoy creating and are happy to share we would love to include. Please could the children include their age.
All proceeds will go towards the repair of Ashwater Church tower. Whatever your religious views, the church is a great asset to the village.
To submit your recipe, or for further information, please contact: Ann Shadrick at Nevassa, Fiona Pates at Fionapates@aol.com, Margaret Edmond at Firhill or at edmondmgt@btinternet.com

Tea Time

Last year Christian Aid held their first-ever Tea Time, a unique fundraising event that brought lots of people together to help people in poor communities to work their way out of poverty.

This year we thought that we would like to join in and help to make Tea Time an even bigger event. So do please come along and join us at 'Ashgreen', the home of Terry & Wendy Darby on Friday 19th September 2008 from 2pm - 7pm. Everyone's invited! Telephone 211229 for more information.
