Parish Hall

GREAT NEWS!
We have confirmation from the Big Lottery that the New Hall may go ahead. The hall sub-committee have met with the builders and also satisfied the Big Lottery Fund legal department that our match funding is in place. Contracts are being drawn up and we are on schedule for a building start date in mid-June. Once the site is taken over by the builders and secured, the public will not be permitted entry at any time of day or night until the hall is built and ready for occupation. This rule will be strictly enforced for the safety of everyone concerned. Work will only be carried out during reasonable hours from Monday to Saturday.

To record part of the new building project for posterity the hall committee are considering the opportunity to bury a time capsule in the foundations. Ideas would be welcomed from everyone, particularly children, including the contents and type of container to be used.

Parish Hall AGM

The AGM will take place on Wednesday 6th May in the Parish Hall at 7.30pm, immediately followed by an ordinary meeting. Due notices have been displayed. User groups are reminded that the Hall Secretary requires details of nominated representatives before the AGM and they must be willing to serve as Hall Trustees. At the AGM there will be an election of those seeking to serve as members of the Hall Management Committee and at the ordinary meeting the Management Committee Officers will be elected. All residents of the Parish may attend both meetings and anyone who would like to help run the new hall or is interested in forming a new user group are welcome.

Horticultural Club

May's meeting will be a visit to Trevano Gardens on Saturday 9 May. The gardens are near Helston. Non members very welcome. The cost is £10 per person, which includes coach fare and entrance to gardens. Members will be subsidised. This is a full day outing. If you would like to join us call Fiona on 221403.

Our Annual Plant Sale will be held on the Village Green on Sunday 17 May - 10.30 to 1.00 pm. This will include a bric a brac stall, and tea and cake will be available. In previous years everybody has been very kind in donating plants for this event, and again we would be most grateful for anything you could either bring along or let either Wendy (211449) or Fiona (221403) know if you have anything you would like picking up. We would welcome cuttings, annuals, veg etc. Bric a brac can be brought along on the day, but again if you cannot make the sale you can call Wendy or Fiona who will gladly collect anything you may have to donate.

Ashwater Lunch Club - Commencing Wednesday May 6th 2009

General Safety Notice

If anyone knows who keeps reversing the ‘Give Way Sign’ at Quoditch Moor Cross would they kindly ask them to stop. It could lead to a nasty accident and it is neither funny nor clever.

Cllr. Des Shadrick

The news that Cllr. Des Shadrick has passed away after battling illness was sadly received. Des will be missed and we send our deepest sympathy to his family. He was a devotee to the local community and a good friend to Ashwater where his legacy will live on through, not least, the new hall project for which he was particularly supportive.

Parish Council

See Hear Centre - a poster has been placed on the notice board regarding the centre which is in Barnstaple - it is a free resource for people with sight or hearing loss. Tel No 01271 373236.

The swing inspection on the village green has been passed apart from the safety surface, which the parish council will inspect.

Various bad road surfaces and pot holes in the parish have been reported to Devon Highways and also where a signpost has disappeared the highways department has been advised.

The Annual General Meeting of the next parish council will be held on the 13 May 2009 and the monthly meeting will follow the AGM.

Citizens Advice Bureau (Torridge and Bude)

Q..I am being pressurised to repay a credit card debt that I can’t afford. I’ve got some other debts too but the credit card is the one I keep getting letters and phone calls about. What should I do?

A..There's a new code of conduct that credit card companies have all agreed. If you've got problems paying back the money and you seek advice from an independent debt advice agency such as a Citizens Advice Bureau, they will hold off collecting the debt for 30 days. They'll accept a further 30-day period if a repayment plan has not yet been agreed, but you're still taking advice from the agency and a repayment plan is expected to be agreed.
They will also give customers at least 30 days' notice of any increase in interest rates and allow customers who then cancel their cards a reasonable period to repay the balance that they owe.
Finally, they will not raise their main interest rate for 12 months after you have signed up for a card.
After that, they will raise rates only once in every six months. If they fail to keep to the code you should complain to the company involved. If they can’t or won’t address the problem you should seek advice.
